ETIAS 2026

Everything is on track for 2026! The EES system (the basic and fundamental system for the launch of ETIAS) is already operational in many of the Schengen countries. Although it is not yet active in all countries or at all border crossings, it is being implemented gradually and is expected to be fully operational at all crossings by April 10, 2026. This does not mean that it is mandatory at all borders yet; each country decides which airports and borders will start first.

Below we detail the progress made in some countries:

Italy: some of the main airports, such as Fiumicino (Rome) and Malpensa (Milan), have already implemented the EES.

Germany: the system started in Düsseldorf, with plans to extend it to Frankfurt and Munich later.

Switzerland (not EU but Schengen): Geneva and Basel have had EES since the beginning; Zurich followed shortly after.

Spain: there have been trials since the beginning at Madrid airport and more airports are being added.

In any case, regardless of developments to date, ALL Schengen airports must be fully up to date by the deadline of April 10, 2026. This will ensure the successful and imminent launch of ETIAS, which, if we are to make a bold prediction, could begin by the summer. It is very likely that with EES active at all arrival airports, ETIAS will not take long to become operational, although its initial date is October 1.

Therefore, the launch of ETIAS is imminent, as early as summer 2026 and as late as October 1 of next year. In the coming months, the European authorities will make the corresponding announcement with the exact launch dates, as well as the announcement of the launch of the app, which will be available for download on all devices. The EES app, Travel to Europe, is already active.

Countries, currently exempt from visa requirements to enter the Schengen area, will have to access ETIAS – SEIAV and obtain their travel authorization BEFORE BOARDING THE PLANE. It is very important to bear this in mind because the check is carried out before leaving the country of origin and NOT on arrival, as many travelers believe.

We will be monitoring announcements from the European Union regarding ETIAS – SEIAV and will keep you informed.
