When to travel with an authorization with limited validity?

The eventuality may arise that we need to travel to a country in the Schengen area, and the option of an ETIAS with limited validity may be the solution. In which cases is it possible to request an ETIAS with such condition? There has to be either one of these situations:

  1. You need to travel for humanitarian reasons or to attend to important obligations.
  2. You are convinced that your ETIAS travel authorization application is going to be rejected or has already been denied, annulled or revoked.

The decision on the authorization with limited validity rests solely with the authorities of the countries that require ETIAS. Here are some examples of situations in which they may consider granting it:

  • Serious illness of applicant or close relative
  • The applicant needs to attend the funeral of a direct ascending or descending relative.
  • Urgent medical cases.
  • Participation in inter-governmental conferences.
  • Summons in court.
  • Concession to the right of transit with short stay.

Once the limited validity permit has been granted, you can only travel to the Schengen country indicated on the application. The validity period will be indicated by the country that grants it, with a maximum of 90 days and multiple entries.
